Palazzo Maria is located in Piazza Duomo, in the heart of the historical center of Cefalù, right in front of one of the most representative buildings of the Norman Citizen: the Arabian-Norman Cathedral. Around the Palace are characteristic charming alleys lined where you can find medieval buildings and typical street as Via Mandralisca with the prestigious Mandralisca Museum.
Strolling around in the area near the palace one immediately gets the true sense of the city: the architectural wonders of the Duomo, the Osterio Magno, summer residence of Ruggero II, the Medieval Lavatory and the delicatessens and trattorias for discovering the authentic tastes of tradition.
The Cathedral of Cefalù
The cathedral was founded in 1131 at the behest of the Norman king Roger II, and it is a synthesis of several cultures. Norman architects and Arabic craftsmen, conditioned by Byzantine liturgical prescriptions, built it. After a period of decline, it has been renovated in 1267. The layout has remained substantially intact. The interior is dominated by the solemn rhythm of the colonnade and by the image of Christ Pantocrator in the apse bowl, surrounded by mosaics showing a very elevated decoration style. On the sidewalls are other mosaics from the late-1200s depicting prophets, the saints and the patriarchs. Please, wear decent clothes while visiting Sicilian churches; it is not allowed to enter in a t-shirt and shorts/short skirt. Opening hours (daily): 08:00-12:00/15:30-18:00.
